Use Experience from Soccer-Career
Mr. Magath, as soccer player and later as coach, you got to know many clubs. Which experiences do you use for your work today?
As athlete, I played in one of the best club teams in the world. During this time, the Hamburg Sports Club (HSV) won three German championships and two of four European Cup finals. At that time I learned from coaches Branco Zebec and primarily Ernst Happel how to accompany a player and a team to the top.
What is your work based on and thus your success as a trainer?
My success in recent years is based on intensive work. Even if this fact is increasingly pushed into the background in the football environment. Though we witness increased marketing, event character and public attention, the basis for our performance is still the sport. And if you want to improve, you have to push your limits.
I always want maximum success, so I demand 100% performance from the players. For me, the intensive work is important and the commitment of soccer players in training is usually crucial for the lineup in the next game.

This statement is based on the principle that football is team sport. This means that each player should put his individual skills and strengths at the service of the team and pursue a common goal. I have a clear idea of what to expect from a player and how my team should play. And I have to convey my convictions so well that the players can implement them …
… are there any difficulties with the implementation?
Even if I sign a four-year contract with a club, it doesn’t mean that I can work on long term developments. The coaching profession at this level is difficult because the basic training of the players takes place under time pressure. You have to show the best possible results right from the start and still work on further development of the players, the system and the team.
