Tennis: Cincinnati 2020

The international Tennis-Circuits restarted, after taking a break from March until August. Due to the ongoing Corona-Crisis the ATP- and WTA-Tours play in a bubble. Players, their entourage and staff compete under strict rules, to secure everybodys health.

The first  event, the „Western & Southern Open“ moved from Cincinnati to New York preceding the US Open. Like other sports, tournaments are run without spectators on site.

Watching various sports events without spectators is a confusing situation for me. I’m still speculating about these new impressions, competitions in big empty stadiums. So far, I have these associations:

  • Testing before the start
  • Sports in dress rehearsel
  • Sports from another world
  • Sports behind closed doors
  • Sports with no atmosphere
  • Sports in another world
  • Modern sports, online
  • Athletes lost in space
  • Sports in seclusion
  • Pure sports
  • Big empty stadiums … i.e. „The Big Empty“ ??

My interim conclusion: Professional sports has become part of modern entertainment industry. Without entertaining spectators, competitions make for weird situations… scenes with no sense, or even nonsense ?? I keep watching and let you know any new further thoughts 🙂
