What is normal for working people, is foreign for tennis professionals: a regular daily routine. We practically live out of the suitcase for eight to ten months a year. Here today, there tomorrow, with big leaps in time, acclimatizing to new situations and places – that is not always easy.
I used to organize my tournament schedule by myself. First there were the Grand Slam tournaments – Paris, Wimbledon, Flushing Meadows and Melbourne – they are a must. Then I usually choose tournaments where I had an advantage as an attacking player.
The few days off in between I spent at home in Germany with family and friends. Because: Even if you are out and about with the same colleagues for weeks, train together and eat together, real friendships among tennis professionals are very rare.
