What’s the level of professionalization in table tennis ?
Table tennis is very training-intensive and a highly technical sport. If you fail to work hard and technically precise it will be punished. In addition, the body has to withstand very high loads in our sport. So, in addition to the actual table tennis training, we do a lot of strength and endurance training. A day for players like Timo Boll or Jörg Roßkopf is an 8 or 9 hour day.
How high is the starting age in competition of table tennis and how long does a career last?
It differs from person to person. Timo Boll started at the age of 10. And Jörg Roßkopf still plays at 35*. A lot depends on the body and the individual playing system. A flexible athlete who can play passively and actively will be able to compete longer than someone who can only play actively.
* Helmut Hampl followed his players Timo Boll and Jörg Roßkopf as head coach DTTZ (German Table Tennis Center) to Düsseldorf. He looked after the successful young players of the DTTB until the end of 2020. Patrick Franziska is also one of the Hessian table tennis players from the Hampl talent factory.
